Spring has finally arrived! While Mother Nature is not cooperating fully with enough of those warm sunny days that make us want to head outdoors and enjoy the spring blooms, we can at least keep the spring feelings alive indoors while we patiently (or not so patiently) wait. After Christmas and all the crazy decorating that came with it, I was excited to begin simplifying, getting our living room somewhat back to normal, and giving it the little spring refresh it was so desperately needing. {Side Note: We had our sconces installed over Christmas, so the living room feels much more complete since my Living Room Makeover post… If you missed it, you can check that post out here to see the room when we first moved in–before we remodeled the fireplace and shelves. You’ll see just how far this living room transformation has come!}
Anyways, I hope you enjoy this tour of our living room spring refresh! Sources for a lot of the decor that I used (or similar finds) will be listed at the end of the post if you’re interested.
I’ll begin by entering the living room through the kitchen. This is the view from our current kitchen table. A half wall separates the kitchen and living room, making the kitchen dining situation a little awkward and trickier to figure out. I hope we can eventually take out the awkward half wall and completely open up the space, but unfortunately it’s something that’s going to have to stay for now. We’re still working on deciding exactly how we want to arrange the dining space in our kitchen, so we’ve held off on getting any new dining furniture in here. Right now we have a square glass kitchen table that we kept from our old apartment placed against the wall and centered on the living room fireplace.
This lovely wood and copper tray above from Crate & Barrel was the perfect piece to arrange a few spring-inspired items in the center of the table. I like to arrange decor items on trays in groups of three, so I gathered together a few pieces that felt like spring to make up this table’s centerpiece. I snagged this cute little green vase from my mom just as she was pricing it to sell at her antique booth. Thought it was the perfect touch of green for spring! I attempted to salvage some flowers from the Easter centerpiece that I created for my last post to fill it {you can check out my last post on styling a pretty Easter table here}. The flowers were holding on by a thread, but they were a nice pop of color against the green. The rest of the tray arrangement consisted of one of my many milk glass vases filled with left over eucalyptus for some extra greenery and a cute little bowl to add a little natural and rustic element. On one side of the tray I placed a white serving bowl and on the other a similar height metal and wood cake stand with a lazy susan on top. Placing a lazy susan on top of a cake stand allows for more room on the table while putting all condiments in easy reach.
Refreshing our living room for spring was a fairly simple task. Our white walls, white sofas and neutral decor already give off a little bit of a natural clean, spring vibe, but adding a few simple details to the decor really gave the space a fresh feeling for the season. Subtle nuances of spring can be seen throughout the space by use of greenery, florals and pops of spring inspired colors and patterns.
I used plants and greenery (both faux and real) to add a fresh and easy spring feel to the room. Touches of spring inspired colors such as blues, purples and pinks were incorporated into the mainly neutral decor to give off more of those spring vibes as well. For instance, adding this cute faux lavender plant above from Home Goods gave an instant spring feeling to the little vignette of shelf decor.
I continued to add touches of green via faux greenery and plants throughout the shelves to give them a simple and refreshing spring feel.
I played around styling the coffee table and couches in different ways, rearranging and replacing decor until I finally arrived at what felt like was a lasting look for spring. Throughout the month of February, I had replaced my woven tray with a wood and copper tray. Returning the woven tray to the coffee table seems to give off more of a natural spring feeling, and I love the natural texture that it adds. (The wood and copper tray then found a new home on the kitchen table as you saw in an earlier picture.) I cut a few branches off the tree blossoming in the back yard to display while they lasted but eventually arrived at the look you see in the picture below.
Arranging my tray again in groups of three, I filled a gray vase with faux eucalyptus greenery from Hobby Lobby and a smaller clear bud vase from Crate & Barrel with faux pink poppies and some real greenery. I kept a wood bowl that I picked up at the Nashville Flea Market and wood beads that I stranded together as the last little accent piece for the tray. On the other side of the tables, I arranged three of my go-to coffee table books each with an object on top. The faux pink astilbe from Target’s Hearth & Hand line added a nice spring touch to the table as well.
In the midst of spring cleaning, I discovered we could utilize the space under the coffee table for extra storage without it looking crowded and messy. Placing a cute basket from Target underneath one side of the table to hold extra blankets or whatever we needed to throw in there and stacking extra throw pillows on the other side kept the space functional while maintaining a clean and organized feel.
Right now our living room layout is very symmetric with two identical couches facing each other on both sides of the coffee table. This layout makes it extra important to maintain a sense of balance when decorating with throw pillows. One way to maintain balance would be to use identical pillows on both sides of each couch, requiring the use of four of each throw pillow. Instead, here I used two different pillow combos on each corner of a couch, and then I duplicated but reversed the combinations to diagonal opposing corners to maintain the sense of balance.
In this case, I kept the blue shibori lumbar pillows from Pottery Barn and black buffalo check ones to go on one side of the couches. I replaced my more wintery and heavy throw blankets with a little bit lighter ones like this blue checked throw from Target for the changing season as well. It’s still a little heavy for spring but we’ve still got our chilly days here, so I’m keeping those warm blankets close for now.
On the opposite side of the couches, I arranged geometric embroidered pillows that I bought from Nordstrom a while back, small black and white striped lumbars from TJMaxx, and I bought two new throw pillow covers from Pottery Barn because they were on sale and I couldn’t help myself. 🙂 They added the perfect dose of spring and perfectly complemented the color scheme of the existing decor with their light gray backdrop and blue paisley block pattern.
{Pacey loves the newer throw pillows too…}
This leather and brass bench, purchased at a great price from Southeastern Salvage, was the perfect piece to add a little bit of warmth to the space for spring. I placed this super cute wooden woven basket from Magnolia Market on the bench to hold some of my spring magazines…because you can never have enough magazine storage around! 😉
Now if only the weather would stay warm and it would start feeling more like spring so we can spend less time on this side of the window and more time playing on the other side…
I hope you enjoyed this tour of our living room refreshed for spring though. Thanks for stopping by and happy spring!!
